Agricultural machinery supplies: farmers ask for release

The Federation of Agricultural Machinery Manufacturers together with professional agricultural organizations asks the Government to modify the decree that blocks the production of tractors, plows, means for crop treatments, irrigation and zootechnical feeding. The sector must be urgently included as an integral part of the agri-food chain, because without these supplies agriculture will be damaged and food safety will be endangered.

The supply of agricultural machinery, equipment and spare parts are fundamental for the maintenance of the agri-food chain. The Italian Federation of Manufacturers supports this and the national and European professional agricultural organizations – Coldiretti, Confagricoltura, Cia and Copa Cogeca – confirm this with official letters to the political authorities. Agricultural companies require machinery according to crop rotations and seasonal needs – explained the President of FederUnacoma Alessandro Malavolti with a letter sent yesterday to the Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte – by purchasing equipment for working the soil, means for crop treatments, for irrigation, haymaking, fruit and vegetables, preparation of animal feed and milking. Without these means it is not possible to carry out sowing, protect crops from diseases, pests and droughts, raise animals and therefore produce the food that can be found in the supermarket.
Similarly, the components must provide spare parts to repair mechanical failures and allow agricultural companies not to stop an activity that is fundamental for food safety, without considering how much mechanization is necessary in the production of bio-energy which is also strategic for the country’s economy. The fact that agricultural machinery has been removed from the annex of essential production by the Ministerial Decree of 25 March, as an integral part of the agri-food chain is incomprehensible – FederUnacoma maintains – also in the face of the fact that in all other countries the emergency measures Covid 19 authorize the production of agricultural machinery precisely as a necessary component of the supply chain.
The request made by the President Malavolti to the Government is that the Decree can be immediately corrected, and that the industries of the sector are allowed to resume production, albeit with a substantial reduction in volumes and always in strict compliance with the prevention and safety measures for workers. Agricultural companies have clearly expressed the need for mechanical supplies – concludes the President of FederUnacoma – and it would be paradoxical, as well as damaging to the economy of the country, that they should purchase them from foreign manufacturers, expressly authorized to produce them by their governments.
